BIOGRAPHY

IMG_4071 3.JPG

Peter Gibson is a Melbourne-born artist based in Victoria, Australia. Motivated by unusual subjects, he sees any scene through an artistic lens and can immediately visualise a composition. His paintings are realistic, dramatic, and atmospheric, with a skilful and unique use of texture, tone, and colour.

His most recent works are experiments in abstraction that develop a point of difference in style and execution. He describes this new style as Abstract Realism.

Peter was educated at Xavier College and later studied Drawing at Swinburne College. He trained under Ambrose Griffin, a well known landscape artist in Melbourne in the 1960s. More recently he studied with Colin Johnson, a notable art critic and international art teacher. He was also a former President of AGRA (Australian Guild of Realistic Artists).

Time for painting was scarce until retirement, but early recognition of his art in galleries and art shows in the 1960s meant that the the drive for creative practice never disappeared, and Peter has become prolific in retirement. He is currently creating a range of works of various subjects and sizes from 45 x 60 cm up to 95 x 140cm.

The subjects of Peter’s works vary between portraits, animals, landscapes, and seascapes. His preferred mediums are oils and acrylic on canvas and board.
